With the fourth and final week of ******** Regional competition complete, places for the 2013 ******** Games in Carson are all set. So how did the Team at Blonyx finish up?
Schrader misses out
Games veteran Nate Schrader of Iron Forged ******** caused the greatest upset in the Mid-Atlantic Region, failing to finish on the podium and ineligible to return to California for another year. 2013 wasn't to be the year for Schrader, after struggling with "Jackie" in Event One posting far from his best performance. Despite his quality preparation and a second place finish in Event 4 "The Hundreds", his body was pushed beyond its limits to the point at which it could not fully recover. In striking distance all weekend, Schrader could not bridge the gap on the top 3 finishing 6th overall. No doubt Schrader will come back even stronger in 2014, with 2013 being eventful all round with injuries mixed in with the birth of his child.
Heartbreak for Connors
Continuing the theme of heartbreaks, 2013 was supposed to be the year for Alicia Connors from ******** Taranis. After finishing first in the Canada West Region for the ******** Open, all eyes were on Connors as she took the next step to book her place to California. The weekend started well, with a 7th place finish on Jackie in Event One, followed by a 3rd and 5th placing in Events Two and Three respectively. Connors' strong performance early on had her well placed to take the honors for the weekend.
However it was not to be, with her worst nightmare occurring in the Overhead Squats. After posting three overhead squats at 175 pounds, Connors injured her elbow and despite her heroic efforts to continue it was all too much. Connors was forced to withdraw from the competition in devastating fashion. At only 23 years of age, Connors showed maturity beyond her years acknowledging that despite the setbacks of 2013 time is on her side to reach her dream of the ******** Games. No doubt Connors will bounce back stronger than ever and make a huge push towards California in 2014! We wish Alicia a speedy recovery to training soon!
Mammoth effort by Manning
Not to be outdone, Curt Manning from ******** Sherwood Park pushed Lucas Parker all weekend in the Canada West Region. Manning surged through the field in Event Four, coming from back in the field to take 2nd in arguably the most grueling workout of the weekend, 'the hundreds'. Manning also took 1st in Event 6, edging out Parker by a second in what was described as an amazing battle between the two. This strong showing from Manning was enough for a sixth place finish in a tightly contested Region.
Bolter in Canada West
A surprise packet from Canada West Region, Jayde Quilty took 6th place overall in just her first time at Regionals! Quilty flew out of the gates taking 2nd in Jackie and 3rd in the Overhead Squats. Not to be forgotten, Quilty blitzed the field in Event 5 taking 1st in the Deadlift and Box Jump couplet. While challenged in the other events, Quilty was sitting in 3rd for much of the weekend with this athlete from ******** Whilster one to keep an eye on. Amazing performance Jayde, congratulations!!!
Another contender struck down by injury was Bryce Hafso. With a 5th place finish on Jackie and 3rd in Burpee Muscle Up couplet, Hafso's consistent performances had him positioned well on the leader board going into the final day. But a back injury prevented Hafso from competing in the final event, cutting his weekend short. All the best Bryce, we hope you have a quick recovery and are hitting training again soon!
That concludes the round up of the ******** Regionals, as things heat up with the ******** Games just over a month away. Keep up to date with Blonyx over the Games season as athlete’s ramp up their training in search of Games Glory!
